My GB 206 sometimes ticks over at 2500 rpm and sometimes stalls. We've had the throttle body apart and cleaned. The stepper motor seems OK. We are going to check the lamda sensors and the throttle sensor but the latter is obsolete and different from the P38. There are no faults on the code reader and otherwise the engine runs OK. any ideas?

I’ve got a similar problem on mine.
If you work it out please give me a shout.
Cheers
Rob

Find a good diagnostic specialist with the right kit to interrogate the ems.

The lack of a fault code only means that the sensors etc seem to be working, or more correctly, haven’t got so bad that the engine thinks they are fubar.

You can go around and around the costly “change the part” loop a number of times beforehand you get it right.

Unfortunately, many of the cheaper fault code readers won’t let you read the PID data that could show you the readings for:the sensors, so you could see if any look out of kilter.

I bought the Nanocom, and can reccomend it, but I’m a specialist out in Madeira, so it was worth the investment. Cheaper “one car only” kits are out there, and might be worth considering.

Captainbeaky

Which packs did you get for the Nanocom?

TD5 for 10As and Range Rover GEMS for the engine side; or did Nanocom have a special pack that suits the 50th.

Thanks for the comments. My guy is using Autologic which I think is pretty good. Part of the problem is that the amount of information you get from these early engines is limited. It's not like interrogating a Disco 4. I expect we'll get there in the end. I'll let you know the outcome.

I’ve got the defender TD5 and p38 v8 packs at the moment, I do a lot of work on the favourite engine out there - the td5.

When checking the parameter info, check that everything makes sense.
Is the coolant temp about right, does the mass air flow change as you rev the engine, does the throttle pot change value smoothly and progressively. etc etc,.

I had a real puzzler on a TD5 pedal sensor the other day. Looked ok, until you pressed it really really slowly. The first 1mm of pedal travel would produce a reducing voltage before an increasing voltage on one of the signal lines, so the voltage basically dipped and recovered int he first 1mm of travel.

Thank you for this. I've forwarded it to the LR specialist who is working on my vehicle. He is Ian Timberlake of Timberlake Motors in Thame in Oxfordshire. A very competent chap if anybody needs one.
Isn't GB 306 the one that had a big accident? Although they built 385 I presume it's 386 because there's no 013.

Sorry. Typo. I meant to say GB 386, not 306

I have had this 3 times in the last 5 years !!

Mine might not be the same but twice it has been a case that the battery has boon on its way out and both those times a new battery has cured it instantly.

Had exactly your symptoms !!

The third time was the air intake hose that had got a split in it, temporarily cured with duct tape until I can find another one !!

It may be neither of the above but may be worth a look

Thank you for this. The battery seems OK but who knows. It's certainly worth a try.

It may or may not be, at the time the car started fine and the battery wasn't going flat

It was only after 3 or 4 months of crap running I got desperate and had pretty much-tried everything else !!

Good luck

Yup, GB386 has had a very hefty rear end wallop, that took out the rear axle and diff, and badly twisted the chassis - even broke the sunroof due to the roof twist!

I’ve exported it to Madeira, because I’ve emigrated, and I’m in the process of rebuilding it on a brand new galv chassis at the moment.

I’ve got a new galv chassis, second hand td5 rear tub, rear door, side panels and a late puma roof all going back on.

I was wondering why Ian Fox sold it to me, as it’s all there, and the car was in great pre-accident condition, and the price was very good. I bought it as a non-runner - not bothered, as I’ve got another whole v8 engine spare.

I know that accident damaged cars can go for 30% less, but landrovers tend not to lose money as long as they are well rebuilt on new chassis - let’s face it, anyone who has had a chassis-off restoration is essentially in the same boat.

Again, this doesn’t bother me, as I’ve bought this as a keeper.

Turns out the engine wasn’t developing oil pressure. The oil pickup pipe has two bolts. One had come loose and dropped out, and the force of the accident dislodged the pickup pipe.

It has taken out the bearings, but the crank is still ok, so I’m putting new bearings into it, and let’s see how it goes. I’ve got another brand new crank spare anyway, so I’ll be ok either way.

The oil pump is less than pristine, but again, I’m not bothered, as I have a brand new timing cover in stock.

( you can probably tell that I’ve been planning this for a while, and gathering parts!)

Work has stalled on this while I move garages into my new ( much larger) workshop. Photos will follow as and when.

Mike.
