What are the options for fixing or replacing the display , Is it the same as a td 5 item or a unique 50th item . |

Try a company called Cluster Repairs.
They sorted mine out for me. |

Totaltronics.com did a great repair for myself a couple of years ago saving my mileage to the new LCD & improved the connection. Recommended _________________ B Chisholm |

Mine's numbers disappear when I don't drive her for a few days in the damp winter months. the numbers always start working again when the weather warms up. I assume its a little bit of damp in the connections somewhere. _________________ Defender 50th Anniversary Edition GB236

The display issue is the ribbon cable inside the speedo that fails with time, that fault is an easy enough fix for instrument repair companies; Cluster Repairs did mine years ago and it lasted a few years.
Once it went again I bought a used TD5 speedo and had it set to the correct mileage then had JSF fit it for me (needs the connector plug on the loom changed in order to fit). The TD5 is a similar, but not identical, looking speedo and whilst it means it's not original, it is a permanent fix rather than repairing/ replacing 50th speedo every few years. |

For anyone else following, try akspeedo.com (no affiliation) they sell a pre-bonded lcd/ ribbon cable for 20 quid. Just did mine - worked immediately... let's see how long it lasts _________________ Rob

I've also fitted the AK Speedo repair kit for £26.

You have to be very careful getting the speedo apart. I used some tools from a mobile phone repair kit to separate the front bezel from the main body of the speedo.
Removing the speedo needle also takes some nerve. It just pulls off. I heated it gently with a hair dryer and that seemed to help.
You also need to remove the front face of the speedo (glued on) to remove the LCD screen (which is also lightly glued in).
Overall not too bad to do, if you take your time and are careful.
It works well so far.
